  •  Santa Ana Sucker

The Santa Ana Sucker (Catostomus santaana) is a native fish to Southern California. They averagely grow to less than 16 cm. They also typically live for only four years. There range is very small, as wikipedia's article states:

"The Catostomus santaanae range is extremely restricted; they are native only to the Los Angeles, San Gabriel, Santa Ana, and Santa Clara River systems in Southern California. Populations have been lost from several parts of the rivers, so that they now only live in the upper portion of the Los Angeles and San Gabriel drainages in the San Gabriel Mountains in Los Angeles County, and the lower part of the Santa Ana River in Orange County, especially areas with additional water effluent from sewage treatment plants.
Although some stretches of the rivers are 'wild' and protected by being within the Angeles National Forest area of the San Gabriel Mountains, the coincidence of this fish's range and the Greater Los Angeles metropolitan area, and flowing in concrete lined flood control channels, means that it is a vulnerable species to extinction."

  •  California Killifish

The California Killifish is such a cool fish. It is the only killifish that lives in Southern California. They are amazing fish that can handle extreme water quality and changes: salinity, ph, oxygen, and other pollutions. The site that the above image comes from states that they inhabit  brackish water but can be found up to 2 kilometers in fresh water, I have found that they can go much more far upstream.  I really like these fish because they are native and are also related to guppies.  These fish can be found all the way up from Monterey down to Baja California. Some sources state that the fish can get to 12cm in length but they mainly get form 1inch to 3 inches from my observations.

The brown trout is a freshwater fish that has been introduced to North America for sport and mainly food. Originally from Europe, they are now common in many streams and rivers throughout the US. Young brown trout will usually eat various types of invertabrates and insects, while larger fish are active predators of other fish including young brown trout, sucker fish, whitefish, and rainbow trout. Adult brown trout will also feed on small animals that fall into the water such as baby birds or mice and voles. The largest brownies feed under cover of darkness. Brown trout can be caught with fake flies, jigs, plastic worms, spinners and more.
